Should I go to Sea?

This is a question every Skipper should ask themselves before putting to sea. On completion of this course, armed with a detailed passage plan and up to date weather forecast you will be able to answer the question with confidence.

Understanding sailing theory is every bit as important as attending the practical sailing lessons.

Part of your sail training will involve plotting a course to steer and 3 point fix's on the chart, compiling passage and pilotage plans, running the ships log and learning to avoid navigational dangers to name a few situations, it is these skills gained in the classroom that allow the boat and crew to arrive safely at their final destination.

During your practical week, skills gained in the classroom will be appiled to real situations on the water.

Maximum 6 students per class - no large groups so you get the personal attention you deserve.

To compliment the shorebased navigation course, the RYA has a selection of 1 day specialist courses including VHF radio, 1st Aid, Radar, Diesel Engine and Sea Survival, all aimed at making your time afloat safer and more enjoyable.

Navigation Books

When you first start sailing on your own, you will be content to be just out sailing, but within a short period of time your cruising ground will begin to feel restrictive. Time to dig out the charts and start exploring further afield, once again it is the knowledge gained on the shorebased courses that allows this adventure to begin.
