Royal Yachting Association (RYA) – Who are they?
The RYA is the recognised body for leisure boating in the UK; they are responsible for issuing Certificates for sail and power craft on behalf of the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) the marine side of the Department of Transport.
Established over 130 years ago the RYA has changed substantially since its inception. Original interest was purely in Yacht racing but their development over the last 30 years of providing Training courses and promoting Youth and Disabled sailing has led to several gold medals at Olympic level adding to their credibility as a World leading Training provider.
RYA training courses are considered to be the best in the Industry with courses covering all aspects of the boating scene. Practical sailing lessons give you time at sea and plenty of hands on experience to suit your ability whilst the shore-based and theory modules concentrate on navigation, VHF radio, 1st aid, sea survival and radar skills.
Practical courses cater for all levels with Start Yachting and Competent Crew for beginners having never stepped on a boat before, leading on to Day Skipper for intermediates and new boat-owners or those looking to charter boats for sailing holidays. The higher level qualifications of Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal, Offshore and Ocean, are the most sought after, especially by those looking to work in the leisure boating industry. Types of work could include boat deliveries, charter skippers or sailing instructor, although some individuals choose the higher level qualifications for peace of mind before embarking on a long distance cruise.
The organisation is very active in lobbying the Government on behalf of the public to prevent excessive legislation from over-burdening the boater; they also offer legal advice to members and have an excellent reference and general advice section on their website available to all.
Training centres operate in 23 Countries and must adhere to strict guidelines. Annual inspections help to ensure that high standards are maintained. Training courses are available for windsurfing, dinghies, keelboats, cruising yachts, powerboats and motor cruisers, so whatever your interest they are certain to have a suitable course to help improve skills and knowledge. |
