Just finished the RYA 5 day Competent Crew course with Shane and Debbie, who are both amazing people. We quickly settled into El Rubicon very comfortably. She is a beautifully maintained yacht that clearly reflects Shane and Debbie's love of her. Shane's relaxed, confident, and very patient approach to guiding us through this course was exactly what the 3 of us needed. He ensured we understood and learned the basic's of this course through daily theory discussions and constant rotation of on the boat training at the helm, manning and trimming the sails, and regular boat maintenance. Both Debbie and Shane are incredibly easy to be around, very relaxed and always professional. Debbie made sure we all ate well, with some fantastic lunches and dinners on board. Thanks to you both for a great week of training. Best of luck at the Boat Show. John, Al and Gladys |

Shane & Debbie are AMAZING. I spent 5 weeks with Shane, doing Day Skipper Theory (1 week), Day Skipper Practical on the Cruise in Company to Ibiza (fun AND educational - 2 weeks), and a Mile Builder (2 weeks). From my initial inquiry, they put together a bespoke itinerary to help me meet my goals (Coastal Skipper, 8 weeks in total) despite scheduling constraints, which even included referring me to another sailing school for a few weeks. Like Lorraine Chapman said below, Shane has a great style of continuous on-the-boat teaching & confidence boosting, regardless of one's level of experience. El Rubicon is very well-maintained and comfortable, and the Coles are gracious and thoughtful hosts – thanks for the mozzy nets! and amazing food, and comfortable clean linens - in addition to being practical and knowledgeable skippers/teachers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! |

A rather belated thank you for a great 10 days on board "Rubi". I can only really re-iterate what has been said below about Shane and Debbie's professionalism, incredibly patient teaching style, culinary skills...etc. These guys really do put 110% into making sure you enjoy the whole sailing experience whether sailing for fun or looking to learn as a beginner, an improving beginner (still asking those basic questions over and over again (thank you)!!) or working towards becoming a yachtmaster. Having also just experienced a week of the English summer (ie rain) the added attraction of being able to sail under the Spanish sun means I'll be back....! |

My husband and I had actually booked with PASA sailing school but on arrival were asked to join Mar Menor for the duration of our 'mile building' experience. We had slight reservations about this as we had not done our usual 'research' of this particular school. However, we had absolutely no need to worry.
We were welcomed on board by Shane and quickly impressed by his sailing knowledge and subtle ways as an instructor. He was particularly patient with me ( having the least knowledge of our crew of 5) and i thank you for that. We were very quickly at home on 'El Rubicon' and the school showed no signs of skimping with the quality or quantity of food given ( as i know does happen in other schools). In fact our culinary experiences were augmented by catching our own fish and being shown by a fellow crew member how to catch, kill, fillet and cook Tuna ( even had a bit of Sushi ! )
The camarade of our crew was great fun which made life aboard much easier, particularly on the 'long hauls'.
I gained my 'competent crew' Chris gained the miles and knowledge of night sailing and new navigational skills we felt we were lacking. Shane easily catered for the needs of the less experienced and the more experienced in a way that never made you feel embarrassed or in adequate. We were immersed into 2 brilliant weeks of sailing and were exposed to a variety of weather situations including an unexpected and not forecasted ( ! ) early morning passage through the gibraltar straits in fog ! I learned a new respect to large tankers sitting quietly in the gloomy haze!!
Shane you have passed on your knowledge/passion and expertise in a way that never made me uneasy on the water or when handling the boat. You have reinforced my desire to keep sailing and opened up new horizons and challenges that Chris and i will share on board our own yacht "Somoya".
Many thanks again, I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending you. I am so glad we were asked to sail with you. I will miss, Katie, Elmar, Justyna. and of course you. but I hope to see you again somewhere in a marina along the mediterranean coast. ( perhaps birdwatching? ha ha !!! )
Cheers !

Its rare to find nowadays people who are dedicated to not only what they do but with the drive to share that with others. Shane and Debbie were excellent, charming hosts, and professional. The right mix of time spent on theory and hands-on, with a group size maximised for the benefit of the students! The ICC 3 days flew past and were extremely enjoyable. Recommended most highly. Will be back! |

Thanks for a great week, Shane and Debbie. Learned loads on the Competent Crew course. Thanks for your patience, Shane(especially with the knots!). The food was great too, and we had fun!I would recommend the Competent Crew course for all those people who sail with their partners but who often feel unclear as to why or how some sailing decisions are made. I'll feel a lot more confident around my own boat now! |

Thanks for a great week. One yachtmaster and one comp crew later. Shane we really appreciated your calm methodical style of instruction and no nonsense attitude to safety - whilst being pretty laid back and letting us enjoy ourselves. It was great to have the step by step yachtmaster exam preparation, which got me through. Thanks again. Charlie and Louise (students of Langkawi Sailing School) |

Thanks Shane and Deb for everything (the great meals and the numerous 4 AM starts included-Shane you really should sleep more!). I couldn't have achieved my yachtmaster without your tireless efforts. Seems like the last 16 weeks flew by. Look forward to seeing you somewhere in the world. Who knows maybe the Canaries this fall. You have been instrumental in making my sailing truly a life changing experience! Fair winds....Jeff (student of Langkawi Sailing School) |

Rob and I really enjoyed our sailing trip with you last year in Spain. Albeit a taster trip, we have definite plans to do our training with you in the near future, so we have the confidence to buy our own little yacht one day! The dolphins were a real plus too, fantastic! Look forward to seeing you again this year in July.... can't wait! We are recommending you to all our fellow Haciendians on our Golf Resort and surrounding area in Murcia and Mar Menor, and anyone in the UK who fancy a 1/2 week sailing trips too! Good luck with your trip home. Kind regards, Audra & Rob |

Along with the other messages I see on this website, I have got to say that I have never had such a good training for anything. Shane and Debbie are true masters at installing confidence in people and getting trainees to undertake involvement in new areas without feeling embarrassed if anything goes wrong. The three days I spent with them for my ICC training was unforgetable. Well done guys and I wish you well.

I am so glad that you guys were able to help me deliver my yacht from Phuket to Singapore last year. As we knew, it wasn't the top of the season and we did run into a bit of weather...in addition to "container ship alley" in the Malacca strait! I was greatly impressed with your sailing skills, chartering help but most of all, your profesionalism and calm during the inevitable ugly squalls that always seemed to hit us during the 3am watch! I've been sailing for over 30 years, but I learned a lot from watching how you worked together. Thank you so much! Tobin. |
